I believe viewpoint diversity is an important issue for academia, but too often the cause seems to be hijacked by people who just seem to want to shout at liberals or defend racism. What are we to do?

Free speech and viewpoint diversity aren't the same thing. Viewpoint diversity is imo a practical issue for academia specifically, free speech is a right.

'Free speech' is not the same thing as viewpoint diversity, and there's a tradeoff regardless

Not complicated at all. What is widely accepted today, may not be in the future. I don't see how people cannot wrap their heads around that fact. Free speech protects everyone.
