Can you imagine model legislation that state legislatures could pass to reform their state universities over silencings, firings, tenure decisions, discrimination against anything that isn't the dominant view in academia? Write that legislation and pitch it to legislatures.
A conservative gov't here made universities create free speech codes to a certain standard. Unfortunately, the requirement didn't have teeth & left too much wiggle room for unis, which many took full advantage of. Yes, sadly most universities were able to say something akin to "of course we will protect free speech, as well as all other aspects of social justice", which allowed for easy conflict resolution should free speech and social justice collide.
The challenge is in getting the ideas and the rules correct. There's a strong need to reform universities. But I personally don't know how to do it.
