PS in terms of how people can help, I'm discussing some possible strategies with friends & colleagues, & will share some ideas in due course.
It's not easy, given the circumstances.

Lots of retweets & replies saying 'academia already fell' or 'let it fall'. There are still good & brave professors fighting for free speech. Letting them get purged will just lead to an ideological monoculture that makes universities _stronger_ as indoctrination machines.

I have such mixed feelings about this. I love the academy, and I resent the hell out of what it has become. Part of me wants to save it; part of me wants to watch it burn.
-
Thing is, it won't burn. Uniformity of thought will only make it more influential and harder to challenge.

Genuine question: Do you think it's salvagable at this point?
-
Yes, I do. But there's a very short window of opportunity for saving it.

It's not as simple a matter as promoting free speech. In the name of free speech you've let people ideologically opposed to rational debate and the free speech of others into academia, and now they are your bosses. You have to fire them before they fire you.
-
I agree that these people are opposed to rationality and free speech, and it's a problem. But firing someone based on their irrationality is a dangerously slippery slope. If we try to protect freedom through their methods, freedom is doomed. "He who fights with monsters..."

It's already over, dude (I'm an early-career academic).

How bad is it in your neck of the woods? I’m an early career academic too
