The definition of an average is clear (mathematically clear). But the signification of an average is much less clear. Case in point: you can have the same average IQ but distributed differently. It is very probable it will lead to very different results.

Fun fact: the question "what is an average anyways" (or more generally, how can we summarize a list of measurements) was the basis of the (rediscovery) of the normal distribution and a good chunk of (continuous) probability, led by astronomers. It's not as trivial as it seems.
