“Conspicuous consumption”, “nugatory intrigue and vacant pedantry”. Great phrases. I see this everywhere I interact with anyone who has graduated a Western university.
Oddly, one of the best books for understanding what's going on in American universities in 2020 is this 1918 book by Thorstein Veblen (original subtitle: 'A study in total depravity')
