I have to confess that I was very wrong about academia. It's much worse than I imagined.

It's been a long, slow frog-boiling exercise. Wokeness happens imperceptibly, softly, slowly ... and then all at once it takes over and abuses its power. 'Cthulhu may swim slowly. But he only swims left.' -- Moldbug.

Academia & legacy media are by far the best institutions we've got. Do they have problems? Sure. But IMO "burn it all down" and/or "it's irremediably broken" is a very dangerous response. You think OAN is better than the NYT? Liberty U is better than Harvard? Come now.

It's essential to see that critiques of MSM, unframed by "...but OBVIOUSLY better than Limbaugh/Hannity" and critiques of the academy unframed by "...but OBVIOUSLY better than Liberty U" end up driving ppl towards straight propaganda.

Nah. New media offer excellent scholars and disparate voices where you can do deep dives into interesting topics. They also smash artificial and sometimes corrupt barriers to entry. There are charlatans/bullshitters of course but intelligent earnest folks can tell the difference.

"New media" has some great writing, but it's just not the same thing as NYT/WSJ etc. Do they have many reporters in different nations with connections in those nations? Can they get a deeply reported story on, say, Uighurs in China with actual sources? The answer is no.

I get it—read whatever outlets you think are producing sharp writing for your synthesis and analysis. But ppl abandoning legacy media because they're cranky with the slant of the op-ed pg is...shortsighted and reactionary?

Btw I appreciate that you're trying to make helpful points, expressed constructively, even if we disagree.
