'Religious liberty' includes the freedom of communities to impose their own moral judgments & social norms. 'Equal protection under the law' means everyone must be immune to those judgments & norms. There is no credible way to reconcile these conflicting principles. Never was.

I know, it's idealistic, and probably unrealistic. And you would know more than most everyone. It does seem like so much of our lifestyle is unnatural, artificial, and incompatible with our nature, yet we make it work, even at the expense of our health, our sanity.

Will there ever be a perfect system? Probably not. It might just be better to have smaller, localised systems. But how to make them compatible with one another?
