Civic Nationalism works well, but only in certain circumstances, and I believe that we have kept pushing the boundaries until it broke. Universalism works, but only in certain circumstances, i.e. when the set of agents it applies to isn't actually universal.

Enlightenment ideas overextended themselves; in reality it's all just genes and atoms and game theory. There is no such thing as a "human right" and all people aren't equal by any non-vacuous definition of "equal".

Regressing to tribalism is a common theme in human history. It is odd to see our progressive modern society revert back. We have lived so long with peaceful wealth we are not prepared for the reversion. Will be a bumpy ride.

Our entire economy consists largely of neofeudalist rent-seeking. The financialization of the economy represents the return of feudalism in disguised form, and it's anything but local.
