One mark of a toxic cult is that if you ask its members (1) what they actually believe, (2) what evidence they have for those beliefs, & (3) what other evidence might change their minds, they're outraged that you even asked.

The worst and probably the most offensive question to those who suffer from a lack of basic logical thought is the last question. The fact that they can at times stand in the face cold hard facts and not even think about changing their minds, speaks volumes for their intellect.

Even intelligent people may become defensive of their beliefs in the moment. But the outrage in the face of a different perspective is another story. I've talked to people with some pretty loathsome beliefs, and my initial reaction is normally genuine surprise before anger.

I have beliefs inspired by personal experience, but I'm open to contradictory evidence and I certainly don't expect others to base their own beliefs on my experiences.
