If you demonize an entire profession, good people won't want to join the profession. The only police reforms that will work in the long term are those that make careers in law enforcement _more_ attractive to bright, brave, virtuous young men & woman.pic.twitter.com/BQhzlnrfP1

This strategy has been tried. Police have been relentlessly praised as "real life heroes" for decades. It didn't work.

You think the idealization of police in a lot of mainstream TV & movies had zero positive effect on recruitment? Have you asked any actual cops what first got them interested in police work?

Yes, mainstream TV and movies (which invariably praise police) are a major driver recruitment. And outcomes remain disastrous. This does not advance your point.

I'd argue that mainstream TV and movie depictions are a big part of the problem. Just look to Law & Order, L.A. Noire, etc. The standard narrative is regularly a good cop heroically ignoring lesser considerations like "human rights" or "constitutional protections."

You could argue that's actually a bad avenue. Cops in movies and TV are always "heroic". More often than not, they flout the rules because they just KNOW what's right. I mean, Zootopia is a kids' movie... and Judy Hopps has collusions with the mafia and tortures a prisoner.

I know it sounds silly, but yes, if your original and main model of how to be a cop is their image in movies and TV, that actually explains a lot of what's happening these days. Cops who seem to think that as long as you know who the "bad guys" are, rules and laws are for losers.

GM, I think you’re correct. But how to recruit attractive bright, brave, virtuous young men & women? There is only one way. Will Durant: History reports that the men who can manage men manage the men who can manage only things, and the men who can manage money manage all

TV & Movies also demonize law enforcement and they show (and give Americans) false ideas about how law enforcement really works-including use of force. A lot of movies/tv use uniform officers as stock characters that are killed for fun (Tarantino et al) so it is important to not

To think the messages are too positive. Also, I think we like to blame police for the myriad of failed social programs that our politicians created such as the war on drugs, Title IV-D, and the welfare state. And yes, I was a police officer.
