This strategy has been tried. Police have been relentlessly praised as "real life heroes" for decades. It didn't work.

You think the idealization of police in a lot of mainstream TV & movies had zero positive effect on recruitment? Have you asked any actual cops what first got them interested in police work?

Academia is full of good folks but they never seem to have to power/energy to shift culture. So we get extremely high levels of stress and mental health issues, endless toxic work environments, abusive relationships between advisors and students, bullying of staff by faculty...

If you demonize all sorts of perfectly legal professions, weapons manufacturing for instance, or the cigarette industry, good people also won't want to join those professions. If you don't, good people may join but they won't be safe in those professions.https://mobile.twitter.com/yezvarn_qvilaxl/status/1268747855939997698 …

When professions enforce standards of conduct incompatible with the law, actively removing the 'good apples' who they can't rapidly assimilate into corrupt or bloodthirsty cultures, encouraging brave and caring people to join won't help.https://features.propublica.org/weirton/police-shooting-lethal-force-cop-fired-west-virginia/ …

Being a cop is over. For the first time in history, NYPD officers overwhelmingly say they do not want their children to enter the force. We’ve taken the dignity and honor out of the job, now we’re tying their hands and defunding them. Well, not all of us. The DNC.

You mean like an early retirement after 20 years, a car for their own use, overtime pay based on the greater of actual hours worked or a minimum amount, prenegotiated raises, and less education than a cosmetologist? Do better than that?

Or you could just have more of the budget go to their salaries than surplus military gear and remove policies that allow cops to escape responsibility for their screw-ups. Treat it more like a profession and less like a club for military LARPers.
