A common assumption is that virtue signaling means people don't really believe what they say, but I think it's wrong. It's just that, if having those beliefs and expressing them didn't yield social benefits, they wouldn't express them and often wouldn't even have them.
I wrote a book titled 'Virtue Signaling', &, FWIW, I agree with this tweet. Virtue-signaling is usually 'honest', but it isn't necessarily meaningful, effective, or free from strategic self-deception.
It's hard to gauge what ppl actually believe re race issues in this country. The social pressure is so immense. I think people are aware when they ignore things that are blatantly obvious (like increased crime = increased policing = increased bad policing).
