A common assumption is that virtue signaling means people don't really believe what they say, but I think it's wrong. It's just that, if having those beliefs and expressing them didn't yield social benefits, they wouldn't express them and often wouldn't even have them.

It's hard to gauge what ppl actually believe re race issues in this country. The social pressure is so immense. I think people are aware when they ignore things that are blatantly obvious (like increased crime = increased policing = increased bad policing).
