Old men would (on the aggregate) have already reproduced, relative to young men. Their fitness matters far less, from an evolutionary perspective.
Old men can still have kids pretty late into life, and any extra kids at any age is an evolutionary win.

Yes, but on the aggregate, the vast majority of their offspring will come before old age. So anything that confers a survival advantage at an early age will have a disproportionate effect on the traits that get passed on to the next generation.
