If this was the main explanation, younger men would have thicker beards, and older men less thick.
Old men still get in fights bro, and may need the protection even more

Old men would (on the aggregate) have already reproduced, relative to young men. Their fitness matters far less, from an evolutionary perspective.

Old men can still have kids pretty late into life, and any extra kids at any age is an evolutionary win.
