People suffer traumatic brain injury when punched with 16 oz boxing gloves so I'm a little dubious a scrap of hair would help.

Doesn’t have to help every time, or to a very high degree, to confer an evolutionary advantage. A relatively small advantage could still have a large evolutionary effect over time.
