The pandemic is costing the world more than $30 trillion this year (over 30% of over $100 trillion GWP at PPP). Seems like it would have been prudent to spend a few trillion on pandemic preparedness over the last few decades.https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1264926947156594689 …

Well, no. It is not the pandemic that is costing us that, rather the series of absolutely not inevitable choices that societies made given the pandemic, . Seems like we should have spent resources to avoid being this terrible at decisionmaking.

Coherent plans for handling a pandemic would have been part of pandemic preparedness.

One of my favorite bloggers, Prof Reynolds, has been writing about this stuff for decades. Some people were thinking ahead -- but not enough people I guess. link: https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/016836/ …pic.twitter.com/pwLZKc0KJI

Best possible way to prepare for a pandemic is to make sure your nation is as rich as possible before it hits. Because the solution is to take a long break once it hits.

This was No. 1 on UK's National Risk Register. How much extra expenditure on preparedness would have resulted in how much reduction in cost?

For the next 99 years, we will be better prepared for the next one. We need major investments in risk mitigation for other improbabilities.

Hindsight is always 2020. We can't even spend taxes well to fix today's problems. People don't want their taxes going to problems that haven't happened yet, even if they are good investments.

That’s a one time cost of less than 8% in one quarter, that will be mostly made up in the second half of the year.
