Would it not be a bit unethical for an advanced civilisation to run such simulations? I think even today if you could create self aware gaming characters, there would be an out cry if you put them in shoot em ups?

The simulation hypothesis suffers from a recursive problem. If we are running inside the simulation then why wouldn't the simulation also be running on top of another simulation?
