I suspect there was a LOT of PTSD among WWII vets. They just wanted to chill out, raise kids, & be normal in the 1950s. Their wives mostly got it, hugged them after they got nightmares, & let them be. Then their kids decided their dads were 'square' & boring, and rebelled....
