A 2015 article in The Atlantic (http://bit.ly/3d2tzvy ) persuaded me that Alcoholics Anonymous is popular yet ineffective. While some of its critiques still seem valuable, a new review found that AA is the most cost-effective treatment for alcoholism. http://nyti.ms/3da25V5

I want Twitter to expand their max poll size so that it is easier to also include choices like No Idea and and other forms of uncertainty.

I am not sure, I know from my reading the founder was a psychedelic user. Maybe ,it needs an upgrade? I mean the science Hopkins and MAPS are doing around this is interesting. Micheal Pollen also has a good alc. story in Changing of the Mind

I think anonymous group therapy makes a lot sense, but I hear it’s dominated by “Born Again” Christian Doctrine - which can have varying effects either way

That's sad, because AAs should be religious-free

.@SMARTRecovery seems like a solid alternative to AA (It's about offering research-based tools). Unfortunately AA is so dominant other alternatives have trouble gaining a foothold.

I agree that smartrecovery might be better on paper. But for me, the stated principles of the orgs are much less important than the collection of individuals at a given meeting. I've never been to a meeting where there wasnt at least 1 person I could relate to/share burden with.

Personally the time I spent in rehab was the only reason I got clean, but the push for AA/NA was strong (too strong imo) and often presented as the only option for staying sober. There were virtually no other options offered and overcoming addiction is not a one size fits all

Of course AA/NA can help, but I wish there were more mainstream options for those it does not work for
