Reading books by some 20th c. academics, like Bertrand Russell or Ernest Gellner, it strikes you that they're essentially blogging. Much of it is pretty off the cuff and not very structured. Harder to see such books today - may partly explain why some academics like blogging.
Nietzsche's aphorisms were basically tweeting before tweeting was a thing.
