Over 4 billion people have an Internet connection, most of them don't live in your country, and most would charge less than you to do your job. Good luck with your online career!https://twitter.com/robkhenderson/status/1260543598589816832 …

If work from home becomes the new normal after the pandemic, people will no longer compete for jobs with people in their city They will compete with everyone with an internet connection

I remember something in Spent about increasing numbers of competitors and their psychological toll. This would be the ultimate small fish in a huge pod phenomenon.

I think the difference between people already familiar with a job now doing it remotely and people new to a job needing to be trained remotely is underestimated.

If you seriously think about it many parameters will remain: language, qualification, experience, time zone, legal details, etc. Not every job is coding.

He's way ahead as he can write fluent English and has 17k followers on Twitter. Also, the Chinese for example can't even access Google so they are not equal competitors.

@RobKHenderson Companies are already offshoring work now when they can -- even accounting -- but apparently they can't do it for everything or they would be doing it already just like all manufacturing.

This is already happening in a lot of areas, and people are doing just fine. The good (for you) news is that things like generalized linear models and/or hackerrank interview prep seem to greatly defer most of those 4 billion people.

Language is a huge barrier, I work for a company that contracts with a team abroad and the language barrier is leading to increased development time, which is cancelling out any savings from cheaper labor

There are other difficulties with out of country/ region hires that make this apocalyptic scenario unlikely. Many reasonably skilled white collar workers in some fields already work from home. They are not being replaced by cheaper Asian workers.

I'm safe then. I don't get paid for the bulk of what I do online (academic publishing). Someone wants to charge less than zero? Good luck to them
