Yeah, philosophy is pretty ungrounded, and the SR-71 flew quite high. But the analogy breaks down with the fact that the SR-71 flew at all.

Not an academic, so I can't offer insight to that part of the question. Having worked on the Warthog's weapons systems and seeing it in action, the A-10 is pure hell incarnate. It is the most leathal, badass aircraft ever designed. IMHO What would that translate to in academics?
