Free market, & democracy – like Darwinian selection – not good at long term planning. Investors have eye on profits, & politicians on next election. World-destroying asteroid is inevitable in long term. We should plan even for that – & next pandemic is a lot nearer!
TBF chance of 10+ km impactor in next century is less than 1 in 150 million (see 'The Precipice' by @tobyordoxford, 2019). But engineered pandemics, nuclear winter, & bad AI are serious, likely, global catastrophic risks.
