Wow! Noise is a secret killer of performance. A 10db noise increase (from a dishwasher to a vacuum) drops productivity by 5% - but most people don't notice since it impacts cognition, not effort. Also, note that noise is greater in poorer neighborhoods... https://joshuatdean.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/NoiseCognitiveFunctionandWorkerProductivity.pdf … pic.twitter.com/ROejxzbJcP

I thought I was just sensitive. Always wanted limited days in the neighborhood for landscapers to do their work. Too much noise each and every day, even on the weekends. Pollution comes in many forms.

Before GPS I remember turning my radio way down in the car so I could figure out where I was going. It seemed like a strange thing I couldn’t explain but was consistent.

Anecdotally, it seems to depend on the noise for me. I can get in a flow state with lyric-light, repetitive music like EDM or instrumental soundtracks. My mind tends to fixate on “words” though.

Yep, music with no lyrics like ambient soundscapes and hip-hop instrumentals are my sweet spot for work sounds.

You don't really understand how disabling excess ambient noise can be until you undergo the misfortune of experiencing hyperacusis.

In my teens, I would do work early in the morning before school to get quiet time. I could also listen to something, so that's not to make it sound like there was no other option
