I don't know any details about this particular case, but I do find it hard to take people seriously when they label anybody else's sexual behavior 'degenerate'. If you mean 'immoral', just say 'immoral'.

The connotations are important. "Degenerate" or "phobic" imply a problem within the bearer that needs to be treated. They're sick, the poor dears. "Immoral" or "wrong" imply free agency, and therefore there's less healthy superiority from which to attack the person being labeled.
