What kind of Orwellian euphemistic fuckery is “gain of function” viral research? That soulless shit always gives me the chills. It’s “improved killing ability” viral research. The press is under no obligation to use the same dead-eyed language as the perpetrators of this horror.

Counter-point: sterile euphemisms might be justified if there are 'information hazards' from revealing possible applications of what's really being researched? Flip side is the euphemism is a general signal to all, not just bad guys. If terrorists paid more attention to accurate, alarming language, so might those in a position to defund and dismantle. Nothing ultimately improves via strategic lying, witness “masks don’t work.”

Fair point. I can see both sides of this issue, and it's an important & alarming one that doesn't get enough discussion among scientists.
