Pro tip: if someone says they're 'very concerned' about climate change, ask them if they're more worried about permafrost melting or about methane clathrate melting. If they don't have an answer ready, they weren't 'concerned' enough to learn much about climate change.

Citizens don't have to become policy wonks in order for them to care about an issue and vote that way. Ideally, we wouldn't also have quasi-deniers and what-abouters defying the overwhelming bulk of climate scientists. Their ignorance is a lot more dangerous.

Why have democracy at all if citizens just defer to 'experts' & 'journalists'?

You're exaggerating. The citizenry is - and can - be informed at different levels of detail and that can be enough to have a functional democracy. Has it ever been otherwise? Or would you have people take tests before they can vote?

We could, if we wanted, transfer to a "deliberative democracy" where citizens are informed before votes. But hmmm... I wonder which side of the aisle would prevent this?

Both sides tend to dismiss whatever science doesn't accord with their preconceived world-views, sadly. One tends to dismiss climate science & epidemiology; the other tends to dismiss behavior genetics, intelligence research, evolutionary psychology, etc.

True, and the science denied on the right pertains to more serious, existential issues, such as climate change (isn't that this thread?) At this moment the moral choice is pretty clear. Once we have a decent climate response, then the left's weaknesses become more pressing.

Science denial on the left includes paranoia about nuclear power, which is one of the few peacock things we can do that will have a big impact on ghg emissions. It will also lower pollution.

“behavior genetics” lol couldn’t even wait a few hours before unbuckling his belt and starting in with the eugenics pseudo-science apologism

One side ignores the overwhelming consensus of relatively hard science while the other tends to disagree with one particular side of arguments in relatively soft sciences over which much controversy remains. These things are not the same. Also, I loved "Spent" & enjoy EvoPsych.
