Suppose Mars is proven to be lifeless. Is there any moral obligation against settling humans on it? What's your argument?
On utilitarian grounds (greatest happiness for the greatest number of sentient beings), we'd have a moral obligation TO colonize a lifeless Mars in a safe & sustainable way ASAP.
