Any alien civilization advanced enough to achieve interstellar travel could (1) hide its visit so completely that no one could detect them, or (2) reveal itself so obviously that no one could doubt them. The idea that they're teasing us with grainy UFO sightings is kinda dumb.

Disagree. I’ve thought about this. They could have much experience in revealing themselves to other places like Earth. Perhaps they’ve learned to slowly reveal themselves so when they make their presence undeniable it isn’t a giant shock and you have more reasonable Earthlings.

Or perhaps they are individuals not acting on behalf of their home planet and just wanted to dip in and give some earthlings a show. Anything is possible. We certainly can’t presume to know all possible motivations.

When I was a teenager I read Erich von Däniken. It inoculated me from UFO Conspiracy Theories later in life.

Russian sci-fi writer and Burma scholar Kir Bulychev watched the von Däniken film with his colleagues. When Däniken strayed into area of Bulychev's expertise, his lies were obvious, but elsewhere, Bulychev thought, "There must be something to it." His colleagues thought the same.
