Does anyone know where “bioethics” as a field went so horribly, systematically wrong?

Over the last couple of decades, Bioethicists suffered some pushback against utilitarian reasoning, which tends to be interpreted as sociopathic, so most of them turned gutless, and lost any willingness to challenge people's untutored moral psychology.

Utilitarianism is a normative ethical theory. Nobody's ever pretended it's a good descriptive account of human moral psychology, have they?
