Weird timing, I know, but: I'm thinking about working in Shenzhen, China, for a while next year. Would love to speak with any expats who have lived there and/or worked in Chinese universities. Email or DM me please.pic.twitter.com/GebalFrBPr

Never been to China, but I've talked to lots of people who went as exchange students. Bottom line: In any situation in which strangers' self-interest says they should lie to you, assume they might well. E.g., advertised size of appartments will usually be higher than true size.

Not in academia, but have worked with many companies in Shenzhen and enjoyed it. Played golf at Mission Hills and amenities are much less expensive than HK. I often drive up to the border crossing, but the train from Tsim Tsa Tsui to Lo Wu gives you access to the subway system.

Check out serpentza and laowhy89 on YouTube. The former worked in Shenzhen for several years. Neither would recommend PRC right now.

Most of these comments are not helpful. Being called China’s Silicon Valley but with way more advanced technology and innovation due to less regulations. Close to Hong Kong and a lot foreigners live there.

This is very likely when being greater than six sigma for openness is a few sigma too many.

While I have a problem with American companies making products in China with cheap labor, I don't see sending professors there as a bad thing. If we're headed to a Cold War with China, increased cultural diplomacy is good, isn't it?
