In my early career, in the Reagan era, I believed American politics was a healthy debate between two sides that passionately espoused rival principles. Now I look back and wonder: was politics all that different then? Or was I just young and naive?
Public culture was intensely curated by media gatekeepers in the 80s, enforcing an Overton Window invisible to most. Now it's a social media free-for-all, and everyone has their own Overton. It's a small difference that makes all the difference, for better or worse.

This is why the patriot act, government-sanctioned silicon valley surveillance, devolution to WWF-level political propaganda, & now the economic wealth trasnfer "stimulus" just had to happen. Cheap individual access to IT, data, & broadcast is too great a power for the masses.
