An honest US federal government would say all of the following (thread, 1/N): 1) We messed up about as badly as any government can mess up when confronting this crisis; 2) We should have planned much better for pandemics in general, and we utterly failed you in that duty;

For an evolutionary psychologist this is disappointing from an analytical perspective and a “improving the system” perspective. People in power don’t get into position a like that by being conciliatory, besides it wouldn’t change anything anyways.

The emotional foundation of ev psych is trying to imagine what everybody would say if they actually told the truth about their lives & motivations. Hard habit to break when thinking about governments.
