The pandemic has already cost universities millions of dollars. As they consider the possibility of remote classes into the fall, they’re worried about losing students, too.
Perhaps this will be an opportunity to get rid of faculty tenure as well...

It's already happening, though - this is just fast-forwarding a process that's been playing out slowly for years.

True. It's been happening for decades. But until there are alt-university start-ups that offer viable credentials, it seems imprudent to give up on existing institutions entirely.

I think it's partially because most other industries don't have tenure, and also a perception that faculty productivity drops after receiving tenure. Not always the the case, of course, but true enough of the time in non-R1 universities that it has become a shibboleth...

If you all get let go at the same time you could form your own university.

I think you are perhaps at a place in culture where you could be involved in catastrophic frame shift. College isn't cool any more. Be a circuit riding preacher or form a collaborative effort to teach specialized materials.

And if faculty gets the rep it deserves (expensive institution that punishes free thinking and creates people who can't get out of debt/are useless to society) what's wrong with that? Just one more step before it crumbles and something better replaces it.

Disagree with Geoff Miller. Tenure also locks in bad ideas and poor faculty. Even worse, most faculty who don’t conform to the orthodoxy never get hired to begin with because tenure raises the stakes so high
