I think we have discovered that universal public education was probably more about the childcare than about the education.

Training teacher here (UK). I came from a corporate background. By the final period of the day the kids are toast. As for teachers hours, even with a roughly 8-3 school day, teachers put in 50-60 hour week.
Teachers work incredibly hard, & believe me, I know how exhausting it is to teach. I think the kids getting 'burned out' is largely a function of too high a proportion of public school 'class time' trying to learn versus play time, nap time, social time, down time, etc,
