I think we have discovered that universal public education was probably more about the childcare than about the education.

Training teacher here (UK). I came from a corporate background. By the final period of the day the kids are toast. As for teachers hours, even with a roughly 8-3 school day, teachers put in 50-60 hour week.

Teachers work incredibly hard, & believe me, I know how exhausting it is to teach. I think the kids getting 'burned out' is largely a function of too high a proportion of public school 'class time' trying to learn versus play time, nap time, social time, down time, etc,

I want to say that a long day is hard on the kids, but probably the real reason is teacher unions.

I’ve always assumed because the system assumes there is a mum at home, available to collect kids, meet with teachers etc, while dad works. The world has changed but this assumption hasn’t.

And also kids were allowed more freedom wander so they could just “hang out” after school let out.

I've always wondered that myself. There are those advocating for an 8-5 school day for that very reason. Scheduling makes no sense!
