My impression back in the early 1980s was that if you were really good at performance art, nobody called you a "performance artist." Andy Kaufman did weird stuff, but he was so good at it he was a "comedian" and "actor," not a performance artist. David Byrne was a "rock star."

Is there big money in performance art? If not then there is no performance art particularly in Kansas.

There are grants and the like. It's not bad if you like performing but don't have any talent that people would pay for if you didn't convincingly label your act "art." But the huge Bowie-sized money is reserved for those who can turn weirdness into mainstream entertainment.
