Adversaries tend to give more useful criticism than friends, yet we usually try to avoid such criticism, because our adversaries are simultaneously trying to rob us of status. The more secure our status, the more we can afford to learn from our enemies.
We can feel very secure in our status, yet still prefer not to be exposed to toxic, malevolent criticism from enemies. It's just a quality of life issue, not a dominance issue.
