The best way to overcome 'imposter syndrome' is to actually master the history, knowledge, skills, & ethics of your profession. The Great Cloistering is a good time to catch up on this.

Does that imply that imposter syndrome is not really a syndrome but a recognition of deficits?

Sorry Geoffrey, but that seems to me to be the best way to *develop* impostor syndrome.

The Great Cloistoring is going to end the great nap and decloister thinking. Very paradoxical.

Or understanding that the promises of your field are smaller than you imagine they are. If you think your field will revolutionize the world in 10 years you may be overestimating things. Which may cause you to feel like you are lacking info on certain things/secrets.

Nobody "masters" any skills. "Imposter syndrome" is an honest understanding of the fact that we are pissing in the wind and that the status one has is not completely based on some imagined merit.

yes! in a way imposter syndrom counterbalances idolization associated with status, the pressure to be 100% perfect. if i think of myself as a fraud it is easier to try new things and fail vs stagnating as a phD
