So I think the Internet really has made the quality of news worse, but it hasn't gotten worse as much as the public thinks it has.

At the same time, the public understandably doesn't care about the structure of the news business. When they see an example of some reporter doing egregiously sloppy or partisan work, they blame "the media" rather than that particular reporter or publication.
