We don’t have civic nationalism in the US, so I’m not sure how the US is a good example. If we did, there would be a non-ethnic National identity. We don’t have that. FFS, we’ve spent the last four decades actively destroying any reminant of an identity.

To be fair, the civic nationalist would say that what’s holding us together is not the economy, but devotion to a set of documents and institutions. Of course, COVID-19 is starting to erode their legitimacy...

Disagree. Civic nationalism held the USA together through the Great Depression. It can be a strong force if cultivated which it is not currently.

The three major networks used to bring us together. The fairness doctrine used to help us take each others' perspectives. Cable, talk radio, the internet, and especially social media have allowed us to drift apart. For good and ill.

Uhh, isnt there supposed to be those truths we hold self-evident? Of course they seem to amount to very little in the end at least it seems so from outside. That's why I base my politics at least in part on maintaining cultural homogeneity while its still possible
