This is a fair point, there is also an answer. Italy has free healthcare. In U.S. healthcare is tied to job. No job = no health insurance. If you get coronavirus, you're bankrupt. There are workarounds, but neither GOP or Dems address this.https://twitter.com/willchamberlain/status/1242156058694627328 …

The Italian economy has been completely shut down for weeks longer than ours, and I haven't seen any reports of Italian commentators pushing to end the lockdown

Tying healthcare to our jobs through 'health insurance' makes about as much sense as tying car mechanics to our jobs through 'car insurance', or tying plumbers to our jobs through 'home insurance'. Best alternative? I don't know. But the status quo is barbaric and stupid.

Why is healthcare tied to employment? During the Great Depression, FDR instituted wage freezes so companies competed for workers by loading up on benefits (ie healthcare) Something to consider while we are making emergency rules today, the lasting unintended consequences.

Don't dispute any of this, but one big reason why med Ins. is still tied to an employer today is "group" plans can help lower the cost of Ins. The only tie to Ins. between employer/employee, is the purchasing power of pooling a large group of buyers.

I haven't had a job in 4 years, so I buy individual coverage, and it's subsidized depending on your income. There's a gap in certain states if you are too poor for the Obamacare subsidy and too rich for the state's health plan--but that's a gap that could be closed.

I would appreciate the ability to openly negotiate my health insurance with a provider.

Not an expert by any means... but, health insurance brokers exist, (why isn't that common knowledge? because Jobs) Problem is that they're tied to government & that makes as much sense as tying mechanics to car insurance agents. Uncouple health insurance brokers from govt?

How are health insurance brokers tied to government? Very few sell anything related to Medicare/Medicaid.

Bingo. What on earth does a software development company or a law firm about fulfilling their employee's healthcare needs? Nothing. It's not their business or expertise. This has always been a catastrophically stupid system.
