If the virus was an evil genius with a sophisticated PR system, it would be manipulating you to: 1) act partisan 2) blame other countries 3) argue about what to call it 4) worry more about 'the economy' than human lives So many people doing what a witless bug would want.

I certainly agree with the notion that these measurements poorly reflect the actual metabolic reality. But I worry about treating it as machine that can be turned on and off predictably, rather than a radical suspended animation trial.

Or perhaps we think it’s a kind of medically induced coma, which is more apt, but still seems to understate the risk of severely disrupting processes whose people parts may not easily come back online in a stable manner.
