If the virus was an evil genius with a sophisticated PR system, it would be manipulating you to: 1) act partisan 2) blame other countries 3) argue about what to call it 4) worry more about 'the economy' than human lives So many people doing what a witless bug would want.

At some point worrying about the economy is worrying about human lives. Social distancing for a few weeks probably saves more lives than it costs. Shutting the whole economy down for a year, would do the reverse. (Though might be justified for a much worse virus).
Nobody rational has advocated shutting the whole economy down for a year. I've advocated a 3-7 week lockdown.

I doubt we would follow through with a year of social distancing. At some point the economic troubles would outweigh the risk of just letting the virus run its course.
