Chess is a full information game between two strategically thinking actors. Chess strategy requires alternating between thinking about your own goals and those of your opponent. This is not a good model for when your opponent is, literally, the most primitive organism possible.

I'd pick backgammon over either. You are limited by uncertain factors you cannot control (dice roll) as to the moves you can make, but it is up to you to make the best moves possible.
