PS assume that if 'failed search' gets more votes than any candidate, the president steps down and the VP takes over until a new election is held in 6 months or so. Or something like that.

In academia we have the concept of a 'failed search': advertise a faculty job, make a shortlist, & interview candidates -- but none are quite right, so we don't hire any, & try again later. Would you like an option to vote that the 2020 US presidential race is a 'failed search'?

The problem with our system isn't who is running, it's with who is voting. The vast majority of voters are significantly unqualified for the job. I prefer the idea of choosing a qualified "faculty" to do the voting.
