PS assume that if 'failed search' gets more votes than any candidate, the president steps down and the VP takes over until a new election is held in 6 months or so. Or something like that.

The problem with our system isn't who is running, it's with who is voting. The vast majority of voters are significantly unqualified for the job. I prefer the idea of choosing a qualified "faculty" to do the voting.
