Confirmed cases will be through the roof, but deaths will be low. We will start hearing more about mild cases and eventually the public will just think of this as a bad strain of the flu and will try for protective measures for the elderly

Indeed. Do people and politicians think that human bodies here in the US differ that much from Italian human bodies?

No, but if anything we are finding in the data there's a lot more mild cases than previous thought. Which is bad for transmission, but good for mortality rates.
