China: governed by engineers trained to think quantitatively about objective reality. USA: governed by lawyers & journalists trained to make subjective verbal arguments to persuade people. Viruses: objectively real; spread very quantitatively; not very open to persuasion.https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1235937299613048832 …

The train crash we are observing in the US is due to the fact that we are governed by lawyers and journalists and politicians, people who specialize in political rather than technical truths. Is it true if others think it’s true? Or is it true regardless of what people think?

@balajis This is all true...but I'm not observing any train crash here in the US. Where is the train crash? Maybe there will be one but I'm not seeing it now.pic.twitter.com/OQBM3xct2R

When praising China, keep in mind that we're in this mess because they totally screwed up the initial response.

Not only that; their screw-up was due to the fact that every early decision was heavily influenced by PR considerations.

And yet the Chinese government response was not exactly a model for the world, was it?

Ha ha. The Chinese “objective” reality is whatever the engineer’s superiors tell him it should be. It’s just imagination but with numbers instead of rainbows. Am I wrong, @BaldingsWorld ?

Yeah. "Rational and quantitative" is what I think of when considering Tiananmen, Tibet, the Uyghurs.... Are we just going to forget Dr. Li? And how much is the CCP paying you to do so?https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51403795 …

I’m a lawyer and after three decades of practice can report that almost without exception courts hate quantitative arguments in general and Bayesian risk updating in particular.

It must then be pretty frustrating to you that Bruno de Finetti, with his Cardinal (oops Saint) Newman argument, saw forensic reasoning as a touchstone.
