Can someone explain why social Conservatives are so obsessed with architecture? Obviously it has a political element, like all creative subjects, but it is a bit ridiculous how much they inflate the subject.

Do you mean functionally bad architecture or esthetically bad architecture? If the latter, do you really believe that your esthetic value judgement is somehow objectively correct?
I think there's probably pretty strong inter-rater reliability on judgments of building aesthetics, if you ask ordinary citizens rather than professional architects/critics. But I'm open to empirical data if you know of any showing low reliability.
