In the US, Bauhaus was the path that we saw but unfortunately did not take in residential architecture. Instead we opted for sentimentality, ornament, and kitsch. Now virtually every subdivision in America is a banal and cliched assault on the senses.
Yes, but the solution is more @wrathofgnon and less mock-tudor mcmansions. Or, schools could actually teach students (i.e. future home buyers) a teeny bit more about art, architecture, style, and taste??

I live in an historic neighborhood -- homes from the 1910s through 1930s. Houses exude integrity & charm. If you attempted to replicate this charm w/ newer construction, maybe only 10% of Americans could afford it. So instead we build vinyl-clad homes in treeless subdivisions.

It isn't about the end price, it is about the developers building only what gives them the highest profit margin. It has always been thus.
